Controlling an overactive bladder

Question: I am having problems controlling my bladder—my doctor says I have overactive bladder. What causes this and can TCM treat it?

Answer: The way this problem is looked at in Western medicine is revealed by the name given to the condition: overactive bladder. In one way this is true: on the surface level this condition looks like the bladder is overactive and needs to be restrained. The main symptom is not being able to control the flow of urine. It appears that the bladder is in a state of excess, and that’s why it leaks urine. TCM has a different understanding. Read more

How to choose a TCM practitioner

Question: I just moved to a different state, and now I’m looking for a new acupuncturist or TCM practitioner. Can you give me any tips to help me find someone who is really good?

Answer: First of all, I would say rely on your intuition. Ask yourself how you really feel about this person. Don’t go by the practitioner’s reputation or fame, or even a referral. You are an important and equal member in the healing partnership! You must feel that you can form a trusting bond with this person. Do you feel comfortable with him or her? Can you open up about yourself, your health and life issues? What does your “gut” tell you?

One question to ask is this: Is your TCM practitioner really there? Is this person passionate about this work? Authentic, high-quality TCM treatment requires that practitioners be present in a unique way. They must listen carefully and actively ask questions about the symptoms you are experiencing as well as questions about your lifestyle. TCM treatment takes skill, patience and dedication. He or she must be able to care about you as an individual and want to work together to help you understand and resolve your health issues.

Also be sure the practitioner is willing to spend enough time. The true essence of authentic TCM treatments is Qi—vital energy that flows through our bodies and everything in the universe. It doesn’t matter what modality is used: acupuncture, acupressure or herbs. The real challenge is whether the practitioner and patient have a true connection that can spark the patient’s Qi, stimulating the patient’s own inborn healing capacity to heal his or her own body. Spirit is the ultimate technique. There must be an energy bond between practitioner and patient. It’s the energy relationship that actually heals, not the treatment technique. Otherwise, the treatment remains superficial—at the physical level of symptoms—and never moves deeper to reach spirit. So this work requires spending quality time, which allows the practitioner to understand underlying emotional and psychological issues, most often the root cause of health problems. You should expect to have adequate time during your appointments.

Another key point: a true TCM healer has a proficient knowledge of the ancient, unchanging principles, theories and practices of traditional Chinese medicine. Good TCM doctors will use the classical four-stage diagnosis: looking, hearing and smelling, pulse-taking, and asking questions. This type of healing is serious because it deals with the human energy system, a system that is even more critical to the human body than the endocrine or nervous systems. So therefore, choosing a TCM practitioner is a serious thing. A practitioner who does not have a deep understanding of the principles and practices of TCM can actually harm the patient and create more internal problems that can be very difficult to fix later on.

TCM lifestyle choices are in harmony with Nature. While most of have learned from popular culture what is and isn’t good for us, you will be surprised about the important differences in the TCM approach. We know very little about the way Nature works at the level of energy, so a good TCM practitioner will always educate you about lifestyle choices from this point of view so that you can create a quantum difference in your healing journey.

Good luck and remember to trust your intuition.

Are there limits to creating your own reality?

Today’s Q & A is a response to a comment posted on a YouTube video of Dr. Lu discussing the power of the mind in creating your reality. You can watch the video here or at the end of this post.

Question: Are there limits to creating your own reality? Suppose I think of myself as four inches taller than I really am, then would I become taller?

Answer: There are no limits. However, you have to meet nature’s requirements.

Sometimes what we think we want isn’t what we need. You can want something, but if you don’t need it, you still can do it, but you have to reorganize, remodel all of your genetic code. It’s a requirement. Everything has requirements.

“You create your own reality” means when you meet the requirement of reality, reality exists. You can want this. But can you meet the requirements? Can you change your genetic code? Can you change your password? It is possible, you can download a new program. But in order to download this, you need to do something.

Creating your own reality doesn’t mean that you have an unlimited credit card, and you can go to the store and buy whatever you want. You can have an unlimited credit card, for example, but you still cannot buy a gun. You need a permit. You have to be 18 and have no criminal record. To get certain things you still have to meet the requirements; it’s not just that if you want it, you can get it.

At the spiritual level it’s infinite, all the possibility is there. But every possibility has a different requirement. You cannot say I want this, but I do not want to do the job. And on top of this, the job has to be done right. Otherwise it still doesn’t happen.

Holiday blues

Question: I’m starting to feel sort of depressed now that the holidays are here. I don’t really like being so busy with all the stuff you have to do at this time of year. It just feels like I’m already busy enough in my life. I end up feeling tired and want to sleep through it. What advice can you give me?

Winter tree

Nature rests during winter.

Answer : Your body feels one way but you are listening to your mind. Look at nature right now: you don’t see a lot of activity, do you? The trees are not growing leaves; the flowers are not blooming! Why? What is happening? Everything is taking a good rest over the winter. There is a positive reason for everything. Nature has to rest in order to have enough energy to grow up in springtime. This is a natural cycle and everything in nature follows that universal pattern; only humans try to go against it.

In the winter there is less light so it’s natural to go to bed earlier and get up a little later. The problem is for most people their lives are not so flexible to allow this. You can choose to go more with what your body is telling you and change things so you have a little more time to relax and rest. Take some time to meditate and feel peaceful. Don’t get caught in your mind and in what you think the outside world is telling you to do. You don’t “have” to do anything but follow your body’s wisdom and what your heart and spirit tells you. Remember, life is for the fulfillment of your enjoyment.

Menopause and TCM: Is it okay to stop taking HRT?

Question: I’ve been taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for years on the advice of my doctor. In the past few weeks there has been a lot of attention in the media about the risks of HRT. For some time it was believed to cause higher incidences of breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes and blood clots, but now a report finds that it increases the chances of death by 50 percent. I’m afraid to take HRT now. Is it o.k. to just stop it? What will happen to me once I’m off it? What’s the best course of action for me at this point?

Answer: When Western doctors prescribe HRT drugs for women who are nearing menopause or who have already started it, their treatment perspective is only looking at one angle of this health issue. The bottom line is this approach doesn’t consider a woman’s body as a whole—it looks at her body as having a medical condition and treats just the symptoms. Read more

Never doubt your body

Question: I want to use natural methods to heal myself from chronic health issues I’ve had for years. Sometimes I believe I can do this, sometimes I don’t. What advice do you have for me?

Answer: Your body loves you unconditionally. It has been created from a tiny cell. Your body is the image of unconditional love. If you want to see unconditional love, look at your own body. There is no mistake. How many people really understand this concept? Bottom line: Never doubt your body. It has spirit wisdom and genetic wisdom; both visible and invisible wisdom blend into your unique body, and that body is an image of unconditional love.

TCM and breast cancer

Question: What kind of help can TCM provide for someone with breast cancer? I was recently diagnosed with it and want to use complementary medicine along with the standard treatments my doctor has suggested.

Answer: TCM can offer women healing support during every stage of breast cancer—and beyond—to help them rebuild and maintain their health. This is possible because TCM, which is a complete medical system in continuous practice for thousands of years, has a unique understanding of energy or Qi (pronounced chee) and how it impacts the health of the whole person. TCM believes we are all born with a self-healing ability. This ability can grow weak, particularly when a woman has health issues for a long time, but it is never completely lost. TCM’s natural methods of treatment—acupuncture, acupressure, classical herbal therapy, Qigong (an ancient Chinese energy practice), and eating-for healing—stimulate the body’s self-healing program to re-function, helping your body to regain its balance and good health.
